At Christmas billions of people will stop to remember and celebrate the birth Jesus. The same Jesus who was born a Jew, raised a Jew, worshipped God as a Jew, read the Jewish scriptures, taught the Jewish law, critiqued and reformed Jewish piety and practice, recruited a group of Jewish followers, was crucified as the king of the Jews, and rose again (so Christians believe) as a Jew, and is currently seated at the right of God the Father (again, as Christians believe) as a Jew.
If you are a non-Jewish follower of Jesus reading this, can I also remind you of these words, from that other great Jewish teacher, the Apostle Paul, in Romans 15:27:
"For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings".
This Christmas we are fighting a fierce global battle against antisemitism. Hatred of Jewish people (sometimes hidden under the guise of 'antizionism') has become mainstreamed.
Non-Jewish Christians owe a material debt to the Jews for all the spiritual blessings they have received.
This Christmas, will you give generously to help us fight antisemitism as a small part of repaying the debt we owe to our Jewish brothers and sisters?
There could be no better Christmas gift to the Jewish community than a world free of antisemitism!
