Citizen and Resident Pledge to Combat Antisemitism

There are lots of good reasons as a non-religious, secular, or humanist, citizen to pledge to combat antisemitism.

  1. Antisemitism, like all hatred, erodes the foundation of our common life.
  2. Antisemitism is a violation of the basic human rights of Jewish people.
  3. Antisemitism has no place in a liberal, democratic nation state, where all people are equal citizens.
  4. Antisemitism is a sign that a society is moving towards a society divided on tribal, religious, or ethnic lines, that in time will result in authoritarian rule by the most powerful tribe or group.

As a citizen/resident:

  1. I reject all forms of antisemitism—past and present, subtle and overt.
  2. I acknowledge the grievous history of western civilisations' complicity in anti-Jewish attitudes, actions, and violence, and I reject any religion, philosophy, rhetoric, or silence that contributes to the marginalisation or persecution of Jewish people.
  3. I affirm the value and immense contribution of the Jewish community to the development of Australia.
  4. I stand as an ally with the Jewish community in our nation and around the world—against hatred, discrimination, violence, and efforts to deny their right to live in peace and security in their ancient homeland of Israel and in the diaspora.
  5. As an ally I commit to:
    - educating myself on the IHRA definition of antisemitism so that I can recognize and oppose antisemitism in all its forms.
    - speaking out when Jewish people are targeted.speaking out when I hear or read antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories.
    - using my moral, institutional, and individual agency to ensure Jewish people are safe and free in our community and country.
    - using my influence to ensure no forms of antisemitism gain support amongst our political leaders, whether at local, state, or federal level.
  6. I will foster relationships with the Jewish community marked by respect and love.
