Melbourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue is a sobering reminder of the rising threat of antisemitism in Australia
The recent arson attack on Melbourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue is a sobering reminder of the rising threat of antisemitism in Australia. In the early hours of December 6, two masked individuals shattered windows, poured accelerant, and set the synagogue ablaze, injuring two worshippers preparing for morning prayers. This was not just an attack on a building—it was an assault on a community’s dignity, history, and right to exist in peace.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as:
“an outrage. The violence and intimidation and destruction at a place of worship is something that we should never see in Australia.”
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus also condemned the attack, calling it:
“shocking and disgraceful. Antisemitism has no place in Australia.”
However, questions remain about the effectiveness of words without action. Mark Dreyfus has supported increased security for places of worship, but despite these efforts, the dramatic rise in antisemitic incidents shows that more comprehensive strategies are urgently needed.
Former Labor Minister Mike Kelly recently issued a stark warning about the Albanese government’s foreign and domestic policies, suggesting that its decisions have deeply serious implications:
“not only jeopardising national security but also eroding the social cohesion that binds us as Australians.”
He has called for a reset of Australia’s “moral compass,” urging leaders to prioritize justice and truth over political expediency.
Australia must do more than condemn such acts. Concrete steps are needed: robust protections for places of worship, a zero-tolerance policy on hate crimes, and education initiatives to address prejudice at its roots. As Kelly observes,
“True leadership requires courage to make tough decisions and align with what is right, even when it divides opinion.”
The attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue is a painful reminder that antisemitism, if left unchecked, can escalate into horrifying violence. Jeremy Leibler, President of the Zionist Federation of Australia, warned that such hatred is words without action.
“a direct consequence of words turning into actions. Jew hatred, left unchecked, endangers all Australians... Enough is enough.”
This is a moment for unity and action. Antisemitism threatens not only the Jewish community but the very fabric of Australia’s multicultural society. Guided by values of compassion, fairness, and truth, Australians must stand together to ensure every person—regardless of faith or background—can live without fear. The safety, dignity, and cohesion of our nation depend on it.
