Synagogue Firebombing Demands Action: Protect Australia’s Jewish Communities

Australia stands at a crossroads: Join us in urging Parliament to take decisive action against rising antisemitism and ensure Jewish communities in Australia can live without fear.

We write to you in the wake of a deeply troubling event—the recent firebombing terror attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne. This cowardly act, which injured two worshippers as they prepared for morning prayers, is a grim reminder of the escalating threat of antisemitism in our nation.

This attack was not just an assault on one faith community. It was an affront to the Australian values of dignity, safety, and inclusion that bind us together as a multicultural society. The rise in antisemitic incidents in just the past year—demands immediate action.

Antisemitism is not a Jewish problem alone. It is an early warning indicator of the threats to the harmony and integrity of Australia as a whole. Every decision made in Parliament must be considered through the lens of its impact on the safety and inclusion of the Jewish community and on the cohesion of our nation.

We respectfully urge you to:

  • Increase protection by providing robust funding for security measures that safeguard Synagogues as a place of worship.
  • Implement a zero-tolerance policy on hate crimes to ensure swift and strong consequences for those who perpetrate violence or promote hatred.
  • Introduce educational initiatives that address prejudice at its roots, teaching understanding and tolerance in schools and communities.

The Adass Israel Synagogue attack was not an isolated incident but part of a growing pattern of hate that must be confronted with courage and resolve. Words of condemnation are not enough. Concrete actions are required to ensure every Australian, regardless of faith or background, can live without fear.

This is not just a matter of security—it is a matter of values. Australia’s commitment to fairness, compassion, and unity depends on our ability to stand against hatred in all its forms. We must come together as a nation and say to those who perpetrate or enable such behaviour, that this sort of behaviour has no place in Australia.

We ask you to act decisively, guided by these values, to protect the Jewish community and ensure a safer, more harmonious future for all Australians.

Yours sincerely,
